So one of the latest political stories to have people abuzz is the new one about Senator Bernie Sanders proclaiming that Trumpo will be “a one-term president”.
Forgive me if I look on that a certain degree of skepticism. Sanders makes this comment using one of the most sorely outdated concepts there is — LOGIC.
In terms of the first three months in office, Donald Trump is the least popular president in the history of polling,” Sanders told The Associated Press. He cited the Republican president’s support for a health care bill that he said strips insurance from millions of Americans, tax reform that cuts taxes for the rich and budget cuts that disproportionately affect the poor.
“I do not believe that if Trump continues these policies that he’s going to be re-elected.”
No disrespect to Senator Sanders — who ,I admit, I did not support in the Dem primary — but that’s blindingly naive. I have said before that just saying “he’s going to be a one-termer” is not going to make it happen. Sure, it doesn’t LOOK like he can get re-elected at this point in time….but he should have never been able to get elected in the first place.
Sanders’ mentions Trump’s polling and his policies as reasons he won’t be re-elected.
I counter that with two words: Supreme Court.
Two more words: Supreme Court.
And lastly I give you this: Supreme Court.
There are other things that are fairly important to the rank and file of the GOP — guns, “making the librul snowflakes cry”, getting rid of the Brown people , and locking up as many of the Black ones as possible — but as far as reasons to Re-Elect Donald Trump, the Supreme Court is #’s 1, 2, and 3.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be 86 years old in January 2020. Anthony Kennedy will be 83.
For the GOP, everything else wilts away underneath that argument.
It’s not a theory of mine, something I just came up with. I saw it in action in 2016. I listen to talk radio. I listen to (OK, skim) conservative podcasts. I read conservative blogs. There was NEVER a day that went by when the SCOTUS was not brought up as THE reason to vote for Trump.
“Donald Trump is such an ass” “Yes, but remember the Supreme Court”
“Did you hear what Donald Trump said today?” “Yes, it was awful .Supreme Court.”
“Donald Trump is such a disgusting pig! Did you hear that Access Hollywood tape??” “Yes, I did Ma’am. It’s disgusting. And Supreme Court”
“Donald Trump is a complete idiot” “Supreme Court”
“Donald Trump is a lying, hypocritical --” “Sir, you’re absolutely right. Supreme Court.”
The Conservative Right-Wing Noise Machine went into overrdrive for Trump and they did their job. A thousand carpenters couldn’t have hammered this point more. They made sure the electorate kept their eyes on the prize. They laid it out plain and simple: Scalia’s seat is at stake. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 83 years old. Anthony Kennedy is 80 years old. Do the math.
So what makes anyone thing that things are going to be different in 2020??
Unpopular policies? Please.
You know who’s going to be more unpopular with the Republican base than Donald Trump in 2020??
The Democratic candidate.
Sure, Hillary was drastically unpopular. I get that. (and I will admit, I was one of those who did not acknowledge just how unpopular she was. “She’s already been vetted!” DERP. ) But let’s not pretend that anyone we nominate won’t be in for a Nickolodeon-like sliming from the CRWNM. Gore, Kerry, Obama … they all went through it.
When you get into the heat of the campaign the Wagon Circling begins. The guys with the white jerseys coalesce on their side, and the team with the black jerseys does the same.
As this new article shows, many Trump voters don’t care about his lies. Everything can be forgiven when there’s a new adversary to be slayed. Whenever they feel Trump may have betrayed them, both he and the RNC will counter back with “____________ will be worse!”
Kids, let’s not make any mistake about it. Trump is a mentally unstable man, yes. But he’s not stupid. He knows human nature. He knows the Conservative Base. He knows they’re a bunch of bitter, angry, and spite-driven individuals. He knows this because he’s exactly like them. He knew they were just been waiting for someone like him to come along and manipulate them. It was a match made in heaven. (Well, hell, actually. You know what I mean.)
And then there is the question that doomed Hillary? Will 2020 Democratic Candidate _____________ be pure enough for the C99 crowd?? You can bet your ass Trump will do the same thing he did with Bernie Sanders. He’ll kiss the ass of the progressive candidate and talk about how “__________ is getting hosed by the Establishment!! Y’ou guys should just stay home and show them what for!!”
Will we be smart enough to see through the tricks and NOT be emotionally manipulated?
If not, then the same thing that I saw coming last September, is going to happen again. Donald Trump will get by with another sub-50% of the vote.
So Bernie (and everyone else) needs to STOP saying “it’s only going to be four years.” We keep continually saying these sorts of things and it lulls us into complacency.
“Oh, that dumb-ass hick governor of Texas — he’s not going to win.”
“There’s no way the Supreme Court is going to decide in his favor.”
“OK, but everyone hates him. He’s going to be a one-termer just like his dad.”
“He lied about the Iraq War! There’s no way he’s getting re-elected.”
I rest my case!
